I am a wife, mother, friend, wine swilling, running buddy, bicycle loving Austinite who is also training to be Doula. What’s a doula you ask? Well, I describe doulas as a member of the birthing team. We assist the mother and partner in having the best birth experience as possible. Whether that be through helping with physical positioning to emotional techniques for coping, we are there to help the parents. We are also an advocate for the mother, although we do not speak for the mother; we empower the mother to know her rights and speak for herself.

DONA International describes doula as someone who:

  • Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life
  • Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
  • Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
  • Stays with the woman throughout the labor
  • Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decision
  • Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
  • Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman’s memory of the birth experience
  • Allows the woman’s partner to participate at his/her comfort level

This is an exciting journey for me as I love assisting parents in experiencing birth fully and completely and also am a huge advocate for women’s rights, especially in the medical setting.

So, welcome to my blog all about my experiences as a doula! Feel free to leave your opinions, experiences, etc in the comment section. If you decide to be mean, negative or nasty, I will delete and block you from commenting again. This site is all about the positive.
